The Brave One - Remind Me Not To Piss Jodie Foster Off!

The Brave One   B+

Starring Jodie Foster, Terrence Howard, and Naveen Andrews
Directed by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game)
Rated R for strong violence, language, and some sexuality
Appropriate for ages 17+

The Story: In what can be described as a modern retelling of Charles Bronson's Death Wish, Jodie Foster is a New York City radio personality that is enjoying a walk through the park with her fiance when they are both brutally assaulted by a gang of thugs.  When she awakens from her coma, she discovers that her fiance was killed and her life has been turned upside down.  Feeling the need to purchase a gun for protection, she puts herself in harms way and finds herself thrust into the life of a vigilante.

The Good: With this much talent in a project, it would be hard to imagine that it wouldn't be great.  The film is so well acted and produced and the story and screenplay are so tight that you end up with a terrific piece of entertainment.  Foster is remarkable as the disturbed vigilante and Howard rises to the occasion as the cop that wants to help her.  I especially loved the dark nature of the film and the serious tone that doesn't relent.

The Bad: While this is a nice take on the vigilante flick - it's still a standard vigilante flick.  It's good, but it's not great.  I didn't expect more,  which is good, because it didn't deliver more.

Also, this has to be one of the worst titles of the year.  With this much creativity involved, one would think that a better description could be made than "The Brave One."

The Summary: Foster and Howard turn in a pair of great performance in this badly titled vigilante picture.
